Jersey Volleyball Association

History

Volleyball is now a well established sport in theIslandhaving started officially in the early 70’s. In 1978 “The Jersey Volleyball Association” was officially launched and formed a Men’s Ladies and Mixed league.

The Association and Winter League is sponsored by the Insurance Corporation, a contract which started in 1990 and has been guaranteed till the year 2007.

Last season (running 2002/03), 5 ladies teams, 4 men’s teams and 10 Mixed League teams battled it out to become League Champions. The Winter Season (running 2003/04) we have 5 Ladies teams and 6 Men’s teams (one of which is, not Men, but our Island Ladies) and another 10 Mixed Teams.

Our Mixed League runs alongside the main Men’s and Ladies league, attracting less experienced players to develop to a standard where they can continue to go into the Men’s and Ladies Leagues. During the last few years, through promotion of our annual beach events, our Mixed League has started to develop into not only as a social sport but, more a competitive game. This season the Association approved the relaxation of our league player rule to increase the competitive edge. Not to discourage novice players, we have also created a split of two division system to divide experienced and novice players.

All teams have features of their local league games published by the media – including weekly reports in the Jersey Evening Post as well as match coverage on CTV’s Channel Report.
